The scam associated with working abroad
It is the dream of every Kenyan to get proper employment and a better life for themselves and their families. Unemployment in the country prompts them to seek alternative ways of achieving this dream. Only a small percentage manages to gain entry to the foreign countries or even accomplish their dreams. What about the unlucky majority?
Many Kenyans stuck in Arab countries work under inhumane conditions for little pay, if any. Stories of girls who have fallen victims of sexual assault are making rounds on the media. These girls are used in brothels and at times end up dead. Others are assured of dream jobs only to arrive and find that the supposed ‘agent’ traded them for money.
Parents helplessly hear stories of what their children go through daily with no solution at hand. Those who are rescued narrate harrowing stories of their experiences. Others are lured into Somalia with the promise of well-paying office jobs only to find themselves being recruited into jihadist groups. We have lost many youths due to this trend that seems not to have an end in sight. The duty of rescuing these young Kenyans has been relegated to NGOs and Human Rights Organizations such as The International Rescue Committee.
The appeal is to our government to create more employment opportunities so as to reduce the clamour for jobs abroad and to reach out to its citizens in diaspora.
